IS JEWISH MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER A RELIGIOUS PROGRAM?
Although spiritual in nature, JME is not a religious program. The weekend
is conducted within the context of Jewish values, but non-Jewish and
religiously mixed couples have participated with great success.
Marriage Encounter was developed in the mid 50’s in Spain by a Catholic
priest and lay couples. It came to the United States in 1966. Forty-nine
countries now have Marriage Encounter weekends. JME was founded in 1972 and
since then, thousands of couples have experienced the weekend.
IS MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER FOR YOU?
Marriage Encounter is for couples whose marriages are essentially good. It
is for couples with good communication, to deepen it; for those with poor
communication, to improve it; for those with no communication, to develop it.
It is open to married couples, regardless of age, who have been married two
years or more. Couples married over 50 years have attended weekends and have
grown from the experience.
Marriage Encounter is NOT a solution for couples who are breaking
up. The program is for couples who have a reasonably good marriage in the
context of today’s pressures and who wish to make their partnership stronger
and better.
